Agenda: Discussion on the restructuring of bar associations and the election system discussed in public opinion
On May 16, 2020, our Board of Directors held an extraordinary meeting via video conference and unanimously decided to share the following statement with the public.
ANNOUNCEMENT TO OUR COLLEAGUES AND THE PUBLIC
At the Board of Directors meeting of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations held on 08/05/2020, in line with the duty imposed on us by Article 110/1 of the Attorneyship Law No. 1136, it was decided to write to 80 bar associations separately to obtain their institutional opinions on the amendments to be made to the Attorneyship Law according to the news in the press.
Our Board of Directors has decided to share the following statement with the public and to announce it in writing to the competent authorities as a result of its deliberations, taking into account the public statements made by our bar associations and the reply letters they sent.
We have once again resolutely stated that bar associations are the indispensable element and carrier pillar of the right to a fair trial and the rule of law;
- Multiple bar associations,
- To abolish the obligation to register with bar associations,
- Amending Articles 76 and 95 of the Attorneyship Law,
- We are against the introduction of the proportional representation system in bar association elections and the change in the delegate structure. (The President of the UMT voted against this section on the grounds that the delegate structure and the proportional representation system should be discussed in detail and a common mind should be created).
- As the Board of Directors of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations, we respectfully submit to the information of our colleagues and the public.
